Are you looking for a wall decal but not sure how to choose the perfect design? It can be difficult to choose a wall decal today as the choices are plenty and we only have so many surfaces to cover. I recommend that you consider four items if you are struggling to make a decision:
1) Area
2) Utility
3) Design
4) Color
What area are you planning to fill?
Is the space square, tall and rectangular or long and wide? Are you looking for a wall decal to sit above furniture, like a couch or table, or will your decal fill an entire wall? This will help you choose the size or configuration of the decal. For example, if you plan to fill an entire wall, perhaps you will choose a decal that comes in many pieces, like the Pebbles, or My Way (pictured right) designs that can be applied in an infinite number of designs. If you have a smaller space to dress, above your couch for instance, you may choose a more simple design like the New York City Skyline or The Roses. A tall narrow space may call for a larger wall decal like The Gentleman or Electric Wire. The idea here is to first plan out the space you want to fill and the amount of coverage you are looking for.
What do you want your wall decal to do?
Think of utility, do you want your wall decal to make a bold statement, subtly sit in the background, or enhance a piece of furniture (or even act as a piece of furniture like a headboard). Decals can be used on walls, doors, windows, room dividers, and furniture among other surfaces. You are only limited by your imagination.
What type of design inspires you?
With space and utility taken care of you can turn to design. Are you interested in pop art, classic designs, geometrical shapes, or abstract designs? What type of wall decal design will best fit your furnishings or the space you intend to use it? Perhaps something a bit more traditional fits your taste, like a decal from the Garden or Baroque lines. Or are you interested in being a little more daring and using a wall decal that takes more of your own designing, like the Micro Dots decal sets (pictured right in brown, black and grey).
Would you like to match current colors or complement with new colors?
Finally, choose the right color. You may already have a color scheme in your space that you want to match, or you may want to choose a color that complements your color theme and adds a new color element to the space. Using a color wheel can be helpful because it helps you to compare complimentary colors. Interactive color wheels can be found online but the colors may be skewed due to screen color settings. A color wheel makes choosing colors for your interiors very easy. Here are four color schemes to consider when choosing your wall decal.
- Monochromatic color scheme: use only one color throughout.
- Complimentary color scheme: use two colors that are opposite to each other on the color wheel, for example yellow and violet. This gives a very bold feeling to your space.
- Analogous color schemes: use three hues placed adjacent to each other on the color wheel but use only combination of warm colors or cool colors.
- Triadic color schemes: use three hues placed at equal distances from each other (IE red, yellow, blue)
