Being Green is Gettin’ Easier Everyday

A partnership based on Green ideals and an attempt to bring about global change is the inspiration for a Dallas duo’s latest Green home. The Green Labron project is the greenest home in Dallas and one of the first projects to receive Platinum LEED Certification. Every aspect of the construction project was conceived in the greenest manner following all LEED standards and specifications. The entire project was live-blogged and documented for the rest of the world to watch and follow the process of building a green home. From the deconstruction of the original home on the property to the home completion, the Green Labron project has documented every step of building and thinking green!

The green construction process involves concepts such as advanced framing, engineered joints and trusses, and the use of quality materials ensure the house stands up to the test of time. The main goal of sustainable building is to avoid expending the energy and materials to rebuild prematurely. The original home was simply not built to withstand the times lacking any LEED qualifications forcing the duo to rebuild.

All materials that could be salvaged and reused were collected and used where possible. The interior was also stripped and materials that could be reused were recycled such as hardwood floors which were carefully taken up and laid back down in two rooms in the new home. The remaining pieces of the wood flooring are now listed on planetreuse.com awaiting their new home!

The interior finishes all obtain LEED points and effectively save energy, water and resources. The Dual flush system and flow restrictors in faucets and showers allow for less water consumption. Carbon Fluorescent lighting is used throughout the home using far less wattage than regular incandescent bulbs. The pair is also attempting to recycle rainwater for use in washing machines except the city has prohibited this as they have not figured out how ensure there is no contamination from roofing supplies or other chemicals.

Where recycled hardwood or bamboo flooring wasn’t used, The Green Labron featured Enviroglas floors in the bathrooms, countertops and the floor treads in the open stair system. The inexpensive flooring option is made by converting post-consumer and industrial glass bound for the landfill into elegant, sustainable and ecological hard surfaces.

The finished product is truly an architectural masterpiece. The modern design along with the green features make it the perfect place to call home. This dynamic duo really has inspired us all to think and build green!

By “full LEED certification,” do you mean LEED Platinum? Platinum is the highest level of LEED building certification. There is also Gold, Silver, and Certified. That’s pretty neat that the entire process was blogged. Congratulations!

One of the owners here: Need to correct one thing: we’re not the first home to get Platinum LEED status in Dallas. There is one other home that beat us under the final regs. We actually have our final inspection next Friday, 8/21. Wish us luck!
